Project Overview
How do life events or environmental factors impact the anatomy of a human?

Body System Project
In Science, students have studied various body systems and learned about each one’s structure and function. They will be presenting their systems in life-size, detailed, diagrams and showcasing their creative thinking for replication of their life-size body.

Data Analysis
For Math, students researched a health outcome that can affect their body system. They found and plotted data into tables. This data was then converted into visual representations through graphing. Students collated research and data analysis into written paragraphs explaining each health outcome.

The Distance Between Us
In English, students read Reyna Grande’s The Distance Between Us, a memoir depicting the many challenges the author and her siblings faced as young children in Mexico, then illegally crossing the border to live in the U.S. Students will be presenting overviews and key events of one of the main characters and bring light to their challenges and milestones throughout the memoir.

Impact of Lifestyle on the Character
Students explored how body systems are impacted by environmental factors derived from life events. Students will share the factors their character faced and make predictions about how the character’s system may be affected.

Push and Pull factors
In History, students learned the various factors that contribute to both the refugee and immigrant experience. Each group will explain how push or pull factors could have affected the choices their character made to leave Mexico and live in the United States.

Symbols in our Lives
Each student will be presenting 3D objects they have created that symbolize and reflect their unique identity. Students will explain the importance of their object in their lives and how they were made. Please visit the classroom gallery of 3D objects to learn more about our student artists.
Lydia Scrivanich directed and guided students on various topics like up-cycling & in methods of 3D creations.

Anatomy of Human Consortium
To launch its Anatomy of a Human Project, 7th grade faculty recently facilitated an Anatomy of Human Consortium, during which several D-E parents graciously took time out of their busy days in the medical field to visit the Middle School and share about their medical specialties. Read More
Q&A session with award-winning author Reyna Grande
Authors recently visited our Middle School (MS) to enrich current units of study. Seventh graders hosted a Q&A session with award-winning author Reyna Grande, whose memoir, “The Distance Between Us,” is central to their cross-curricular Anatomy of a Human Project. Read More
Spotlight on Science: Exploring How The Universe Works
The next installment of our community “Spotlight” series is an exploration of the Science Department—a natural fit as the season shifts to spring! “Science is all around us… it explains how the universe works, how we are alive, and so we encounter it every day,” noted Ms. Tara Weinstein, Science Department Chair and Upper School Physics Teacher. She and other members of the D-E Science Faculty share insights into cross-divisional and cross-disciplinary opportunities our students have been engaged in, from the Scales of the Universe project currently hanging in the STEM Building to the 7th Grade Anatomy of a Human Unit in the Middle School.
