The Adolf Amend Award in Physical Sciences

Presented in honor of Adolf Amend who taught physical science at the Dwight-Englewood School from 1952 until 1975, this award is presented to a senior who has shown consistently excellent achievement and curiosity in the physical sciences.

The Inez Kay Memorial Award In Biological Sciences

Presented in honor of Inez Kay, who taught biology at this school from 1960 until 1974, this award is presented to the senior who has shown lively curiosity and consistently superior achievement in the life sciences.

Human Development

The Human Development Department Junior Award

The Human Development Department Junior Award is given to that junior who stood out in both the 9th and 10th-grade seminar courses. In addition, this junior went on to utilize their demonstrated skills in social identity and mental health awareness this year by becoming one of our strongest mentors to younger students here on campus.

The Human Development Department Senior Award

The Human Development Department Senior Award is given to that senior who surpassed expectations in seminar courses, mentored students here on campus either through a mentor class or club leadership, and demonstrated an exemplary understanding of the importance of social science research this year in AP Psychology.

This award celebrates a student who has dedicated themselves with joy, curiosity, and excellence to the study of multiple languages throughout their years in the Upper School.

History Department Award

The History Department Award is given each year to a student who has sought to develop a sophisticated understanding of the past, who has demonstrated a compelling interest in historical questions, and who has held himself or herself to the highest standards of scholarship.

Metzger Award in History

This award bears the name of a man who taught history at our school from 1929 to 1970. Awarded to that student who, in the opinion of members of the history department, has most clearly arrived at an understanding of the nature of history as an intellectual discipline and has demonstrated in course work and independent study historical scholarship of the highest caliber.

The E. Butler Beaumont Award

The Beaumont Award, named in honor of E. Butler Beaumont who taught at the Englewood School for Boys and Dwight-Englewood School from 1928-1973, recognizes a member of the senior class for excellence in mathematics.

Given to a senior who, over several years of excellent study and work in ethics, has pursued the question of what makes an action right and a person good. With great dedication and leadership, this student has also been an inspiration to other students.

Award for Excellence in the Study of Philosophy

Given to a senior who has acknowledged that a sense of wonder and philosophical investigation help to structure our consciousness, shape our world, and to give rise to culture. This student has pursued the study of philosophy doing excellent work with a sustained dedication to critical thinking, self-knowledge and human understanding.

Excellence in Art & Design

Given to that senior student that demonstrates excellence in the study of two or three dimensional, or design media art (including but not limited to drawing, painting, sculpture, industrial design, ceramics, fashion, architecture, installation art and/or sequential art, illustration, product design, graphic design and or photo/video).<This will be stated in direct descriiption of the award winner> A student who has maintained engagement in art classes throughout their D-E career, pursued artistic challenges and made their strengths visible through exhibition, presentation and submissions.

The Sagan Award in English

Frimi Sagan taught English at Dwight-Englewood from 1968 – 2011. She inspired many generations of students along the way because of her desire for them to know and love literature as much as she did. This award is given to a student who excels as a reader, writer, and critical thinker, who brings to the study of literature a brilliant mix of creativity, enthusiasm, passion for language, commitment, independent thought, and classroom leadership.
